What does Sensei mean?
Sensei is a Japanese word that basically means “person born before another. In general usage, it means “master” or “teacher” and the word is used as a title to refer to teachers.
What does Sempai mean?
Sempai is an honorific term that is used to signify that a person is an elder, senior or upperclassmen. Sempai is used to address a person who holds a higher position than a person of the same social class. At the Upland Martial Arts Center – we use the title “Sempai” for our assistant instructors.
What does Dan mean?
The dan ranking system is a Japanese mark of level, which is used in modern fine arts and martial arts. This is commonly referred to as the “degree” of black belt. Sensei Chris Pellitteri is a 9th Dan – or 9th degree black belt
What does Dojo mean?
Dojo is a Japanese term which literally means “place of the way”. The term can refer to a formal training place for any of the Japanese martial arts.
